I may have found a bug...or I am misinterpreting Pathfinder 1st Ed. rules?

  • +n enhancement bonuses on shields can be added to their armor effectiveness or weapon effectiveness.
  • think one shouldn't be able to add a weapon special ability to a shield unless at least +1 has been added to the weapon effectiveness (adding to armor effectiveness shouldn't count)
  • I use customize button to first add +1 armor enhancement to darkwood shield and then was able to "customize" to add menacing weapon special ability

PCGen 6.08.00 RC7. 

Thoughts? If it's a bug, I'll create a JIRA entry.

PCGen has a critical shortage of contributors.

The release and development of [6.08.00] has been slow and may be the project’s last. It will come with fixes and pathfinder 2ed support. The lack of volunteers has brought development to a slow crawl, both in terms of the programming and the addition of books. Many of the experienced team members can no longer regularly contribute and there have been few new additions. If you use and enjoy PCGen and can contribute, I encourage you to help. Open source projects only continue existing because of regular contributors.

This is not about making people feel guilty to get help. This is about facts. Without contributors, bugs don’t get fixed, features don’t get added, books and materials do not get supported. Many open source projects face this problem as time goes on, there isn’t any pay. It is a collaboration toward a common goal, a helpful program to create PC characters. I know maintenance of older projects isn’t as interesting as the latest and greatest tools/libraries but it is much more cost effective than rewrites/re-implementations. PCGen represents an enormous effort in terms of man hours and it would be hard to replicate.

# To Volunteer
Details follow below. There are three teams, the programmers who implement features and provide fixes, the data entry team, & the support team. To program you must write Java, the GUI is written in Swing and moving to JavaFX. The data entry group requires no special knowledge and the files are all written in a domain specific language. The most important thing is time and motivation. The support team requires no special knowledge beyond the program itself, or website maintenance, or general customer support knowledge, or general organization skills.

# Why support PCGen?

#### Open Source With Many Features

– Anyone anywhere can get PCGen, you just download and run it anywhere Java does.
– It is and will always be both free and open source.
– It supports many rule sets like D&D 5e, Pathfinder 1e, Starfinder, etc… Most official books are supported, but also third party and homebrewed content.
– It allows user modification and extension. That means you can add custom classes, monsters, spells and other campaign materials without needing to program (requires the domain language).
– As it is open source, you can modify the program/UI and optionally send us a pull request.

#### Competition
There isn’t really that much at this time. It is a very niche market making tools to create characters according to pen & paper rules.
There isn’t a lot of incentive for new entrants into the market as it has high complexity and low demand. If new ones did, I don’t see them being open source. To our knowledge, the main alternatives would be Hero Lab and platform specific apps like  Pathbuilder on Android or iOS.

I am not experienced with the competition so I can’t make a full list of pros/cons. There are several glaring cons:

– These are mostly closed source products, so you are stuck with whatever is provided. It may be high quality like Hero’s lab but it is dependent on the author entirely.
– Some of these require one time or ongoing payment. This is great for supporting development but leaves some in the world behind who cannot afford it.
– Android and iOS specific apps are proprietary and if your group has a mix of devices, your favorite app on one may not be on the other. It is good to have a unified experience as a group.

# What Do Volunteers Do?

The primary requirement is available time and motivation, most else is secondary and can be learnt. Existing members can help answer questions you have on the project but they can’t give you a hand held crash course on programming or data entry. You should expect to invest a portion of your time learning the code, some basic team process and the domain specific language. Once you up to speed, you are free to propose and implement features you like, fix bugs or add new books/content.

There are three basic teams.

#### Dev Team

To make the most contributing here you should be a person with programming knowledge & some experience. Knowing Java would be a great plus but experience with related OOPs would be fine (i.e. C++, C#, etc…). Nice to haves but not essential would be:

– have knowledge of Swing/JavaFX for UI
– have worked with git before
– basic knowledge of Tree structures
– experience debugging & tracing programs

#### Data Team

These are the people that input book rules into the domain specific language (DSL). You don’t need programming knowledge, it is more of a data entry role. There are videos and documentation explaining the formatting of information in the DSL and you’ll spend most of your time editing text files. It isn’t the most fun, but without these heroes there’s just an overly complicated Java UI.

#### Support Team

These are the people that keep everyone organized and talking to each other, keep the website running, handle support questions.

So, following the process described in the DATA bug report from 2014 to use Bladebound archetype …. … Black Blade Selection: Black Blade Weapon (Scimitar), and equipping a Scimitar in the primary hand. No Alertness feat is granted.

 

Can someone confirm this?

PF2 the official version is in progress, I haven't completed it yet. Alchemist and Barbarian are completed. Debating Alchemical Formulas - where to fit them. The rest of the classes are getting a relook as I go.

Races - Pretty much done.

Backgrounds - Not fully implemented

Class Feats - Alchemist completed
Equipment - Completed by Brad
Spells - Need review

If you’re not playing PFS Organized Play v1, then you can ignore the next paragraph…

 

But if you’re trying to load all the sources because you are playing PFS Organized Play, then while it is understandable that you may want to do that as a way to research possibilities, it’s still best to start your character with a smaller number of sources. A starting character can’t afford items, feats and abilities to take advantage of EVERY source anyway. Plus you are required to only use sources that you personally own (either as the real book or by PDF) or use limited access to sources as needed to resolve any items in the character’s chronicle sheets. Even if you personally own more than 20 sources I would not start a new PC that many. Also don’t load any sources you know aren’t going to e useful, such as the Gnomes book (unless you are actually playing a Gnome). As the character develops, load more sources when PCG opens and then open the character to add the new sources to the character as needed. You can use Archives of Nethys to research items and rules as you gain resources and levels to know which sources you need to add.

 

For GM’s using PCGen to create interesting and unexpected NPC’s it’s a little more difficult because you really do want all the options and source available, especially if you’re not really familiar with all the rules and you are wanting PCGen to basically show you what happens when you choose X versus Y. My suggestion is to define the NPC’s purpose overall and try to eliminate the sources that you know can’t be, or probably won’t be useful. Unfortunately there is no way I know of to load several dozens of sources and then build a PC or NPC and somehow display a list of which sources were in fact not needed after all. If there were, it would simple to unload those sources and streamline the character. But alas, DEV has enough to do without trying to create a solution for a rare outside case. I don’t remember if GMGen requires all PC/NPC’s to use the same source list (which would bloat the list), but even if it does I don’t think that project is active anymore; so we are again left with only a rare outside use case for PCGen.

 

Otherwise, my suggestions:

 

Avoid loading any source that was a 3.5 conversion unless you are sticking with only old sources otherwise you risk unintended consequences as Pathfinder later developed. Most of the rules in the 3.5 converted sources have been reworked anyway and included in later sources such as Ultimate Magic, etc. So while there might be that 1 in a 100 thing that didn’t get redefined and included in a later source, it’s probably not necessary anyway unless you’re trying to break the game. If it’s a single inventory item you need from one of these sources, edit your custom source PCC file and add an INCLUDE tag to include that item only. That way you are not slowing down PCGen by loading a source that will 99.9% be updated by one or more other sources.

 

Never load any of the sources for any of the modules or adventure paths unless you are playing in one of them. They are not well supported and many of them haven’t been examined in years to see if they still work as intended when newer sources are used. Especially NPC kits that rely on a base kit was ultimately redesigned after the PCGen AP source was created. i.e. for the best compatibility with an AP source, look at when the AP was published and load sources from that date or older. Then check double check the PC/NPC yourself to make sure it is accurate. YMMV. Any newer source has an incremental chance of introducing something that will break and AP NPC, item or rule, or have some unintended consequence. So with old AP’s, especially 3.5 converted ones, use newer sources sparingly.

I would recommend using only what you need, and would suggest asking your DM what sourcebooks he wants to use - "All of them" is not generally a good option unless you're min/maxing.

Just a question, Is there an option to choose ALL the sources from a category?   Say I play Pathfinder 1e and want my PCGen to use all of the available Pathfinder only books.  Do I have to choose each one in the expected order so the remaining ones will become available?   Is there an option I'm overlooking that says use all sources available?   I understand this makes loading much slower.  But how is one (noobie like me) to build a character if not all the books are available to provide the needed options.

I have a couple of questions in relation to Manoeuvrability in PCgen.

The details...

I have a 12th Level Aasimar Paladin with Angel Wings
I have +1 Mithral Full Plate Armour
I have a Medium Encumbrance

Angel Wings - You gain a pair of gleaming feathered wings that grant a fly speed of 30 feet (average manoeuvrability) if wearing light armour or unencumbered, or 20 feet (poor manoeuvrability) with a medium or heavy load or medium or heavy armour. Fly is a class skill for you.

PCgen currently shows my Speed at Fly 20' with a maneuverability of "Average"

Thank you for the information.  However I already have the  Inner Sea Races loaded and the Repairing Nanites trait does not appear as a choice when I search for them.  In fact the Android racial traits are golden on color under the Racial Abilities tab.  I cannot remove Nanite Surge trait in order to swap it with Repairing Nanites.

Wow, missed all of this...

Mounts > Can add everything you have loaded. If you aren't loading the Bestiary then all the horses, et. al will not appear.

Followers > Same thing. Load everything, and you can have anything.

You're only loading the bare bones for player options, which means only Familiars and Animal Companions are available choices.
