Custom magic item pdf output names - any way to shorten them nicely?

Tengu

Hi,
I added a "page of spell knowledge" to my pathfinder character in PCGen. It has to be customized with the actual spell.
Sadly on the pdf output sheet the item which I would call "page of spell knowledge (Life Pact)" appears there with a super long unreadable name:
"Page of Spell Knowledge (Page of Spell Knowledge (2nd) (SPELLNAME[Life Pact] CASTER[Sorcerer] SPELLTYPE[Arcane] SPELLLEVEL[2] CASTERLEVEL[4] ))"
Is there a way to get an acceptably short name for it (automatically)?

Even stranger...the scrolls appear to have loaded into the PC despite the warning...

Were Some Scrolls Renamed? (was Re: How To Store Custom Equipment With Character Sheet (.pcg)?)

Thanks, Mark and Paul,

I think that perhaps I misdiagnosed the problem. The three items that PCGen couldn’t find on load were

WARNING AWT-EventQueue-0 CharacterManager:256 The following warnings were encountered while loading Desmora.pcg

07:16:29.328 WARNING AWT-EventQueue-0 CharacterManager:267 * Could not find equipment: Scroll (Charm Monster)

07:16:29.329 WARNING AWT-EventQueue-0 CharacterManager:267 * Could not find equipment: Scroll (Eagle's Splendor/Divine)

07:16:29.329 WARNING AWT-EventQueue-0 CharacterManager:267 * Could not find equipment: Scroll (Restoration (Lesser))

I just checked and these three scrolls are in the 6.08.00RC3 standard list in the Inventory|Purchase tab, but PCGen couldn’t find them on load. But perhaps they had slightly different names in earlier (6.07?) versions? The old references seem to be of the form “Scroll (_________)” and the new references seem to be of the form “Scroll of ________”.

Thoughts?

Allen

I personally do not use the option to “Save Custom Equipment to customEquipment.lst”. I have to manage about a dozen Pathfinder characters that use several different sets of sources. Some sets of sources (like PFS) are quite large. I was worried that any saving of custom items in customEquipment.lst could cause a problem loading characters that don’t use the source that includes the item the custom item was based on, or worse pulls in an entire source I didn’t want loaded just to resolve the custom item.

Personally I have versions all the way back to 4 something, just in case. :)

I think the option to store in the pcg file is default, and if you completely uninstalled the old data you might have to re-create. But on the off chance see if the old file "customequipment.lst" is lurking in your system somewhere.

How To Store Custom Equipment With Character Sheet (.pcg)?

allencohn

Hi, everyone!

Am I remembering correctly that when I use the automated equipment generator (such as to make a custom scroll) there are two options of where PCGen stores the new creation: either 1) in a general custom equipment file or 2) with the character's .pcg file? If I am correct, where do I set this option?

I thought the answer was yes and that I had set it to store with the .pcg file within the Preferences tab.

I recently upgraded to 6.08.00 RC3. Then when I loaded an old character I got a warning that a few of the character's custom items didn't exist. (Note that when I uninstalled the old, prior version of PCGen I selected the option to not save old characters, equipment... Maybe I shouldn't have!) I suspect that this error was because I didn't direct PCGen to save the custom equipment with the .pcg.

Thoughts?

Thank you for your instructions,
Allen

PS: Thank you for bundling Java 11 with the Windows version. I was scared about all this talk about Java 11 and how it doesn't have an auto installer.... But 6.08.00 worked just fine for me since I used the Windows installer file.

I did sign up for this JIRA thing and opened a data bug. I hope I did it correctly.

More like a week and a bit.

We know, OK.  It's an issue on the webhosting company';s end.  They are being unhelpful support-wise.  I ahve made a complaint to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.

As soon as we get it back up the data will be transferred to a new host.

Yes, thew website is down because the server is down due to technical issues on the webhosting comnpany's end, and their tech support are being annoyingly unhelpful.

1) It might be time to un-pin the 6.08 RC1 release tread as we are up to RC2 and very close to the production release.

2) I looked up the minutes for the last board meeting to find the expected 6.08 production release date.  Well I tried to.  The link is dead.  It may be wiki.pcgen.org is just bad or down.

3) Once the production release is up, I'm hoping to spend some of my Christmas break writing up the Ioun Stone resonance stuff.  Not fancy, like it will automatically add bonuses when slotted in a Wayfinder.  But just able to select a slotted stone and have the correct bonuses work like the old file did.

Re: More issues with RC2

Paul Grosse

I think we have beat this dead horse enough. Mark found some things that are an issue, he brought them up, they were discussed, and determined that they are a minor issue. Although we do need to make sure the uninstall entry is fixed for the production release.

Did Mark have issues conveying them in a socially acceptable manner? Yes, but from our discussions in the past that is how he is. I truly do NOT think he meant to come off sounding like he did in a written communication.

Hi Frost,

Facts and opinions are just that. In the past “some” people have told me that I was too blunt and should phrase things differently to coerce them. I think changing what someone communicates in order to coerce someone else into a specific way of thinking is fundamentally dishonest. It’s better to give facts, clearly stated opinion, and reasoned logic wherever possible. If the result is hard for someone to accept, then so be it. I would hope the vast majority of people can take what I write as though it were an observation of a perceived problem. Nothing more. With no emotion at all.

I will speak and write plainly to convey my meaning. If someone takes offense because I am blunt, so be it. It’s on them. I do not accept the end justifying the means. In a similar vein, if someone asks me “how do I look”, they should be prepared to accept an honest answer, good or bad. I will not lie just to protect someone feelings, whatever they might or might not be.

I am a blunt and to the point speaker.  Ask anyone who knows me.  However, I do not do it in the fashion you did.  I am still respectful and considerate.

You put a lot of people off (including me) by claiming how great a coder you are and the projects you worked on and blah blah blah.  You tried to elevate yourself above everyone else, proclaiming that you were better than everyone.

And you came across as dismissive to the development team of PCGen, who are volunteers.

I know a lot of coders and they never speak or even send e-mails like the ones you did.

I also know a lot of coders who know multiple programming languages, and they have no issues with switching between them, so your comment about "diluting your skills" or however you put it was very elitist.

You program in C#.  Big deal.  You don't need to laud it over them. and it doesn't make you an expert in Java.

You've worked on large scale development projects. Big deal.  So have these guys.

If you called mny support line and spoke to me the way you spoke to the dev team, your issue and ticket would end up int he low priority queue.

Pull your head in re-evaluate the way you communicate.

As others have said, they have no issues with printing in PCGen and paper size selections (including myself).  Also, PCGen is a volunteer project.  Either submit a bug report to have the issue fixed, and someone will volunteer the time to do it, otherwise if it's that urgent to you, join the team and fix it yourself.

But don't sit there on your high horse and try to tell others how great you are and how bad they are.  That's disrespectful.
